What is Event Scenography?

It is important to distinguish the individual elements that comprise the ‘design’ of a performance event (such as light, environment, costume, etc.) from the term ‘scenography‘ which is an artistic perspective concerning the visual, experiential and spatial composition of performance. Influenced by the work of Modernist pioneers Adolphe Appia and Edward Gordon Craig, event scenography proposes that design practices within performance are considered an equal partner, alongside other elements such as literary texts and performance technique, within the construction and reception of meaning.

The practice of scenography is thereby a holistic approach to the composition of performance and can be applied to the design or curation of events within, and outside, of the conventional theatre environment. Or as Pamela Howard states in her book What is Scenography?:

“Scenography is the seamless synthesis of space, text, research, art, actors, directors and spectators that contributes to an original creation.”

Joslin McKinney and Philip Butterworth expand upon this to suggest that:

“Scenography is not simply concerned with creating and presenting images to an audience; it is concerned with audience reception and engagement. It is a sensory as well as an intellectual experience, emotional as well as rational.”

For the centennial celebration of Puig, one of the world’s most influential perfume empires, the visual, spatial and poetic embodiment of scent was artistically interpreted and staged at the Hospital de Sant Pau, Barcelona’s most prized modernist architectural treasure. The four seasons were the protagonists, visually determining the imagery and dramaturgy of the evening. Centred in the main hall was the highlight, the “Source of Scent”, a real water basin with dry ice serving as a mystical projection surface.

The mirror floating above the source not only reflected the projections beneath, but also mirrored the surrounding architecture dressed in real flowers. An immersive triptych made of fine gauze enhanced the architectural dimensions of Sant Pau’s historic ambience. The 350 guests, mainly fashion entrepreneurs and Spanish celebrities, could either walk through or reside in the installation.

Immersive Spatial Scenography

The semi-transparent fabric and visuals extended and created unique spatial scenarios, blurring the guests’ perception of inner and outer spaces. Projections bounced off the triangular mirrors on the floor, extending the installation throughout the space, immersing the event in fleeting refractions and reflections. Scattered throughout the space were little projections to be discovered. Hanging from the ceiling, they surprised anyone who walked underneath them, gracing the guests’ hands with little animations from drops of perfume to whispering mouths. A sensual time travel through the seasons with scent, poetic imagery, atmospheric sound collages and real flowers and plants.

TV-Scenography and Broadcast Design

Event scenography extends naturally into TV-scenography – the design of visual environments for television productions, live broadcasts, and hybrid events. The same principles of spatial storytelling, lighting design, and multi-sensory engagement apply equally to the TV studio or broadcast stage. At CINEWOLF media productions, we bring over 20 years of experience in both live event and TV-scenography, having designed and directed productions across Europe – from corporate galas and award ceremonies to international live broadcasts.

Explore our portfolio of event scenography productions spanning more than 30 international events since 2006 – including the Opening Ceremony of the FIA Prize Giving in Paris, the Ski World Championships 2025 Opening Ceremony, and award galas across Austria and Europe. Why Event Scenography Matters

Great event scenography transforms an event from a simple gathering into a memorable experience. When spatial design, lighting, sound and visual storytelling work in harmony, audiences connect emotionally with the content and leave with lasting impressions. This is the core principle behind every scenographic production at CINEWOLF: every detail serves the story, every space tells a meaning.
